Living in the Valais region of Switzerland we don't see a lot of wine from other regions of Switzerland - god forbid you bring a nice bottle of Chasselas from the Lavaux to a dinner party, much less something with German written on the label! Which is why I was so pleasantly surprised to sample some local wines on my last visit to Graubunden, near the headwaters of the Rhine. The most well-known wine village in the Bündner Herrschaft, as the wine region is known, is Maienfeld - also famous as the home of Heidi, the world-famous children’s book character. The small historic town, with its beautiful patrician townhouses and castles is surrounded by vineyards, and backs up to the rocky peaks that form the border between Switzerland and Liechtenstein, is well worth a visit enroute from Zurich to the Engadin.

Wiikend: Every weekend from April to November wine growers of the Maienfeld Wine Association take turns in serving guests in their wine cellars and introducing them to their products and work.

Dont miss the Lampert Wineries' "Blauburgunder (Pinot Noir) Barrique 2012", aged in oak. or a taste of the local "Birnbrot" (pear-bread made with dried fruit and nuts).
